Mighty Skaros Rock
Skaros is one of the most impressive spots of Santorini. Next to the town of Imerovigli, Skaros has an imposing unobstructed 360 degree view of the entire caldera. Skaros is not only geologically interesting but also historically important. It is the first Kasteli (fortress) that was built on Santorini, by the Venetians, who rules Santorini for hundreds of years, in the 15th century in order to protect from the pirates who roamed the Aegean Sea. In medieval Santorini, there were five Kastelia, but Skaros was the most important of them. Being the medieval capital it was large, densely built and its population was mainly Catholic Venetian aristocracy. Mainly because of the earthquakes its inhabitants gradually left and moved to Fira.
During massive earthquakes in the 1950s the castle was destroyed and today only some ruins are visible at the top of Skaros.
There is a trail beggining from the church of Agios Georgios through the isthmus connecting Skaros with Imerovigli and wraps around Skaros reaching after half mile the small chapel of Theoskepasti with a unique panoramic view of the Caldera and it is the top view spot in Santorini. The challenge here is the big number of stairs you have to go down and up - 300 stairs till you reach Skaros base and 200 till Theoskepasti church, a magical white church standing all alone staring at the horizon and greets you from the top of the black rock from frozen lava. The walk and the view form the top are unforgetable and unbelievably beautiful.
