Akrotiri is the oldest settlement in Santorini and one of oldest in Mediterranean. It is believed that Akrotiri is of Cycladic origin but influenced by the Minoan civilization. It is located at the south-western part of Santorini, with magnificent view on whole Island and Nea Kameni Volcano. Without any doubt, most important landmark in Akrotiri is Ancient City of Akrotiri. But unfortunately excavation site is closed at the moment, after 'newly built' roof collapsed in 2005. First habitation at the prehistoric Akrotiri dates from the 4th millennium BC, the Late Neolithic times.
The settlement was extended and developed during Late Bronze Age, into one of the main urban centers and ports of the Aegean. Austrian historian and archaeologist Fritz Schachermeyr claimed that 'Akrotiri was one of the first republics within the Mediterranean world, perhaps within the whole civilized world. Theirs was the first sea-trading republic governed by patricians'. Even before ports like Eritrea, Corinth, Carrageen, Genoa, Venice and Hamburg.
The end came in the last quarter of the 17th century BC when the inhabitants had to abandon Akrotiri as a result of several earthquakes followed with massive eruption. Volcanic materials covered the whole island and the village as well. But just like in Pompeii, these materials protected the buildings and their contents, even up to date. The 2005. event in no way fits into this story, but this is the world that we live in. Everything has been extremely well preserved because of the volcanic soil of Island. Most of excavations from Akrotiri are exhibited in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens.
