Red Beach
The Red Beach - Santorini is one of the most famous and beautiful of the beaches on Santorini island. It is located on the southern coast near the village and ancient site of Akrotiri and made of black and red volcanic rocks. It is well known for the unique colour of the sand and the hill behind it.
The crystal-clear blue waters of the Aegean Sea uniquely contrast the stunning red-colored sands and soaring red lava cliffs which drop right to the sandy shore. The beach can be reached either by boat from the port of Akrotiri and the port at Fira or by foot from the car park nearby, over a rocky route, or 10 minutes walk from Akrotiri.
Because it is smallish, the red beach gets quite busy. A number of people come onto the headland just to admire this beach and never make it down to the hot sand. The sand itself is reddish black and painful to sit straight onto. There are thus a lot of sun loungers and shades.
The sun seems to beat down particularly strong and many choose to bask under shade umbrellas and beach lounging chairs. Just in front of the clear water is a corridor of large pebbles. You find that the snorkeling is good on this beach due to the interesting rocks. Near Red Beach Santorini you will find taverns and eateries offering meals and snacks should you get hungry or need refreshments.
